Celebrating a Decade of the Nairobi Skatepark

Ten years ago, the Nairobi Skatepark opened its doors to the public, marking a significant milestone in the growth of skateboarding culture in Kenya. This momentous event was the culmination of years of planning, hard work, and collaboration among local skateboarders, international organizations, and a dedicated team of builders and skateboarders.

Early Beginnings

The idea for a skatepark in Nairobi was conceived by local skateboarders around 2008. Fueled by their passion for the sport and the desire to have a dedicated space where they could skate freely, these individuals embarked on a mission to turn their vision into reality. From 2010, they sought the support of organizations and companies that would be willing to fund their project.

Building the Dream

In 2012, a crucial partnership was formed between skate-aid, a non-profit organization based in Germany that supports skateboarding projects worldwide, and the Shangilia Orphanage in Nairobi. This partnership paved the way for the construction of the Nairobi Skatepark.

Axel Reichertz, a former BMX Pro, Skateboarder, and Builder, Christian Petzold, a Skateboarder and Builder, and Ali Krick, a Skateboarder, were among those who worked tirelessly with skate-aid and over 25 local skateboarders to build the park. Construction commenced in April 2013 and concluded in September of the same year.

The Grand Opening

The Nairobi Skatepark was officially opened by Titus Dittmann, founder of skate-aid, in October 2013. This marked the beginning of a new era for skateboarding in Kenya. The park quickly became a hub of activity, hosting numerous events, contests, and sessions that have since empowered young kids and fostered a strong skateboarding community.

A Decade of Milestones

Over the last decade, the Nairobi Skatepark has been continually improved and renovated. Most notably, a major renovation was carried out from January to April 2024, funded by Carrefour Kenya and private donations. The renovation aimed to ensure the park remains a safe and enjoyable place for skateboarders, further cementing its status as a cornerstone of the skateboarding community.

Celebrating Ten Years

In April 2024, the Nairobi Skatepark celebrated its ten-year anniversary with the reopening of the renovated park. The event was a fitting tribute to the park’s legacy and the vibrant skateboarding culture it has helped nurture over the past decade. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we look forward to more years of skateboarding fun and community at the Nairobi Skatepark.
